Tips for Preventing Plantar Fasciitis

Nine amazingly skilled and board-certified doctors direct the Potomac Podiatry Group located in White Plains, Annapolis, and Crofton, MD, and Sterling, Woodbridge, and Chantilly, VA, where they care for the feet of many patients with plantar fasciitis. Our doctors are willing to answer all questions regarding your foot pain and if you need treatment.

What is Your Plantar Fascia?

Located across the bottom of your feet is a rubber band-like thick, connective tissue called the plantar fascia, which stretches along the sole, supporting the arch of your foot. This band keeps the bones of your foot in position and makes up the arch of your foot.

When this tissue is overworked and overstretched, you will have a condition known as plantar fasciitis. The following symptoms can characterize this condition.

  • Swelling on or by the heel
  • Stiffness, especially if you have been sitting or sleeping and are just getting up to walk
  • Pain or soreness in the foot arch that lingers after walking or standing on feet. Pain can range from soreness to sharp, stabbing, random pain.
  • Tightness that you can feel. It will feel like a stretched, tight rubber band on the bottom of your foot.

How to Diagnose Plantar Fascia

The Potomac Podiatry Group located in White Plains, Annapolis, and Crofton, MD, and Sterling, Woodbridge, and Chantilly, VA, explains that plantar fasciitis can be diagnosed by our doctor with a thorough examination and detailed medical history of the affected foot. Our doctor can also use X-rays or MRIs to diagnose this issue.

Treatment and Preventing Further Outbreaks of Plantar Fascia

Treatment of the affected fascia can vary according to the damage inflicted on your foot. Preventing further episodes of inflamed fascia depends on treating the initial problem.

For example, a cause of fasciitis can be ill-fitting shoes or no support pads in the shoe. Treating this issue and preventing further inflammation can be as simple as wearing shoes with support added, such as custom orthotics.

Massaging or stretching the fascia can help resolve the inflammation, and continued stretching to keep the foot healthy.

Treatment options include over-the-counter ibuprofen, ice for short periods throughout your day, and short rest periods following strenuous activity.
